Medusa
May 2026
This opera recounts the tragic myth of Medusa, focusing on her human dimension rather than her monstrosity.
After hearing Poseidon’s call, Medusa is sent by her sisters, Stheno and Euryale, to the temple of Athena for protection. There, Poseidon assaults her, desecrating the sacred space. Instead of punishing the god, Athena transforms Medusa into a Gorgon: her hair becomes serpents and her gaze turns onlookers to stone. Exiled and feared, she becomes the target of glory-seeking heroes drawn to her terrifying power.
Commissioned by La Monnaie, this contemporary opera by Iain Bell, with a libretto and direction by Lydia Steier, reinterprets the myth through a psychological lens. Portrayed by soprano Claudia Boyle, Medusa emerges as a complex and tragic woman, surrounded by the stone remnants of those who sought to conquer her. The work invites the audience to confront her not as a monster, but as a victim whose story demands recognition.
